Cloverfield, not for the emetophobic person

30 01 2008

The new movie Cloverfield has some side effects emetophobics won’t like – nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. The intense jerking around of the camera causes some people to experience vertigo or motion sickness. Those experiencing extreme emetophobia (I have a moderate case of this) will not only pass on seeing this movie in the theatre, but won’t see a different movie in the same theatre.

Why? It’s bad enough that those of us suffering from emetophobia may get sick, but it’s almost as bad being near other people who get sick. I for one won’t be inside any building that houses the opportunity for a significant amount of people to vomit or worse yet, to hear, see, smell, or step in their vomit.

I’m not prone to motion sickness and I doubt I would get sick over this , but why take a chance? I will probably see the movie when it comes out on DVD. Watching this movie at home on a smaller screen with furniture and other objects surrounding it gives me something to glance away at so my mind knows the room is not moving. I also can start and stop the movie periodically if dizziness occurs.

Maybe I’ll garner up the nerve to see it in the theatres but just in case, don’t give away the ending until after the DVD comes out.
